Unions MarketURS Network's Marketplace

MarketThe rules

What can be sold here

These are read straight from the marketplace's own tables, so this page cannot fall out of step with what the listing form actually enforces.

Fees and taxes

1% per transaction

Taken by the platform at the moment of sale. There is no listing fee, no subscription and no cut of shipping.

Sellers own their sales tax

Unions Market does not collect or remit sales tax on a seller's behalf. Registering, collecting and remitting where required is the seller's responsibility.

Anyone can buy

No account is required to shop or check out. Selling always requires approval.

Prohibited items

Apply to sell →

20 categories of listing are not permitted. Several have carve-outs — read those too, because they are usually the difference between a banned product and a permitted book about it.

Illegal goods, services, or activities

Anything whose sale, possession, or performance is unlawful under United States federal law or the law of the buyer's or seller's jurisdiction.

Drugs and controlled substances

Controlled substances of any schedule, cannabis and cannabis products (including hemp-derived intoxicants such as delta-8), precursor chemicals, drug paraphernalia, and any product marketed for the purpose of consuming, cultivating, concealing, or defeating a test for a controlled substance.

Permitted: Books, films, journalism, academic work, and other published or educational works that DISCUSS drugs, drug policy, or cultivation are permitted. The prohibition covers the substance and the apparatus, never the discussion of it.

Alcohol

Beer, wine, spirits, and any beverage or edible containing consumable alcohol. Home-brewing and distilling kits sold for the production of alcoholic beverages are included.

Permitted: Non-consumable alcohol (isopropyl, denatured) sold as a cleaning or industrial supply is permitted. Glassware, barware, and books about brewing or mixology are permitted.

Tobacco, nicotine, and vaping products

Cigarettes, cigars, loose tobacco, chewing tobacco, snus, nicotine pouches, e-liquids, vaporizers, hookahs, rolling papers, and related consumables and hardware.

Sexual and adult content, products, and services

Sexually explicit images, video, audio, text, and live performance; sex toys and related devices; lingerie or apparel marketed on a sexual basis; escort, companionship, or any sexually-oriented service; and any listing whose imagery, title, or description is sexual in nature.

Permitted: Legitimate health, medical, and reproductive-health products and services, and educational or clinical material about sexual health, are permitted where presented in a clinical and non-explicit manner.

Weapons, ammunition, and explosives

Firearms and firearm frames, receivers, and parts kits; ammunition, primers, and reloading powder; magazines; suppressors; explosives, fireworks, and pyrotechnics; switchblades, ballistic knives, brass knuckles, and similar prohibited edged and impact weapons; tasers and chemical irritants where restricted by the buyer's jurisdiction.

Permitted: Ordinary tools, kitchen and utility knives, and historical or ornamental replicas incapable of firing are permitted.

Counterfeit, stolen, and infringing goods

Replicas and knock-offs; goods bearing a mark the seller is not authorised to use; unauthorised copies of software, media, or publications; stolen property; and goods obtained through fraud.

Hazardous and regulated materials

Toxic, corrosive, radioactive, biohazardous, and explosive materials; compressed gases; asbestos; mercury; pesticides and herbicides requiring licensed application; and any item barred from carriage by common carriers.

Permitted: Ordinary consumer cleaning and hobby chemicals in retail quantities, properly labelled and lawfully shippable, are permitted.

Recalled and unsafe goods

Any product subject to an active safety recall, and any product failing a mandatory safety standard — including children's products, car seats, and cribs not meeting current standards.

Prescription drugs, medical devices, and health claims

Prescription medication; prescription-only or unapproved medical devices; and any supplement, remedy, or device marketed with claims to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease absent regulatory clearance.

Permitted: Over-the-counter products in original sealed retail packaging, and licensed practitioners offering services within their licence, are permitted.

Human remains, bodily fluids, and live animals

Human remains, organs, blood, and other bodily fluids or tissue; live animals; and products from endangered or protected species, including ivory, tortoiseshell, and protected furs.

Permitted: Ethically sourced and lawfully documented items such as leather, wool, and shed antler are permitted.

Government documents, identity, and personal data

Passports, driving licences, birth certificates, visas, social-security cards, diplomas and certifications the seller is not authorised to issue; police, fire, and military badges, uniforms, and credentials; mailing lists, scraped datasets, and any set of personal data about third parties.

Financial instruments and money services

Securities, shares, bonds, and interests in a business; cryptocurrency and digital tokens; gift cards, coupons, and stored-value instruments; money transfer, currency exchange, lending, debt collection, and credit-repair services.

Permitted: Ordinary bookkeeping, tax preparation, and financial-education services offered by a qualified practitioner are permitted.

Gambling, lotteries, and games of chance

Lottery tickets, raffles, sweepstakes entries, sports betting, casino services, and any listing whose value to the buyer is determined by chance — including sealed "mystery boxes" of undisclosed contents.

Pyramid schemes, MLM, and referral schemes

Multi-level marketing enrolment, pyramid and matrix schemes, chain letters, paid-referral programmes, and any offer whose return depends on recruiting further participants.

Malware, surveillance, and circumvention tools

Malware, ransomware, exploit kits, botnets, credential dumps, and DDoS services; spyware, stalkerware, keyloggers, and covert tracking devices; account-cracking and CAPTCHA-defeat services; and devices whose purpose is to defeat locks, alarms, tolls, or vehicle immobilisers.

Permitted: Professional security testing, forensics, and recovery services offered by an identified practitioner to a consenting client are permitted.

Vehicle tampering and defeat devices

Odometer rollback tools and services; counterfeit or non-deploying airbags; emissions defeat devices and tuning marketed to defeat emissions controls; salvage vehicles or parts sold without disclosure of title status.

Hate material and incitement to violence

Items promoting or glorifying hatred, violence, or discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation; memorabilia of hate organisations; and material inciting or celebrating violence against any person or group.

Permitted: Documentary, historical, educational, and journalistic material presented in that context is permitted.

Impersonation and misrepresentation

Listings misrepresenting the seller's identity, credentials, licensure, union membership, or authority to sell; and services offered under a professional licence the seller does not hold.

Circumventing the marketplace

Directing a buyer off-platform to avoid marketplace fees or protections; listings whose purpose is to collect contact details rather than to sell; and duplicate or placeholder listings.

A listing that breaks these rules is removed and the seller's shop can be suspended. Report a listing from its page, or write to the coordinators through the URS Network.
