Twelve bottles, six producers, all farms I have visited and all making under 40,000 bottles a year. This season: two Lambrusco di Sorbara from a family in Sorbara who bottle 18,000 a year, a Trebbiano and a Malvasia from the Colli Piacentini, two Schiava from a grower above Bolzano, a Friulano and a Ribolla from the Collio, a Sangiovese from Faenza that is made by people I went to school with, and a Barbera that I keep buying and cannot explain. Nothing here is a trophy. Every bottle is something to open on a Wednesday with food. Nine of the twelve are under sixteen euro a bottle at what I pay. Comes with a single sheet, not a booklet: who made it, what it costs them, what to eat with it, and whether to chill it. Half of these want twenty minutes in the fridge and nobody tells you that.
