One person, thirty eight years, mostly in Wisconsin. I review compensation and market studies, design surveys and samples, build staffing models, and teach people to do the first eighty percent of this themselves. My clients are locals, worker cooperatives, small nonprofits, and now and then an attorney. I have worked for employers too, at the state, and I will say plainly that the analysis is the same either way. What differs is who can afford it, which is the whole reason I price the way I do. Three rules I work by. I show the arithmetic, always, in a form a committee member can check with a calculator if they want to. I tell you when your position is weak, in private, before you take it into a room. And I will not sign a number I cannot defend under cross examination, no matter how much everyone would prefer it. Everything I sell here is either an hour of my time or an attempt to make that hour unnecessary. The workbook exists because the same six questions came up in every engagement for four straight years. The workshop exists because reading a wage study is a skill, not a talent, and it can be taught in an afternoon. I answer my own email, usually within a day, and I am glad to talk through whether you actually need to hire anybody before you spend money finding out.
